About the Artist
Born in Long Island New York, Faculty Art Show artist Jodie Niss has been an artist for as long as she can remember. Her early exposure to galleries and fine museums helped shape her constant love of art. As a child, she took classes at the Artist League and Rosen School of Painting. In her teens, she helped to teach at the Roslyn School of Art, and took pre-college classes. She received her BFA from The Savannah College of Art and Design, and her MFA from Pratt Art Institute. Jodie has shown her work in Florida, Savannah Georgia, Seattle Washington and New York. Currently residing in Brooklyn, works in art handling and teaches Painting classes at the Educational Alliance Art School.
About Jodie’s Work
The process of painting for Jodie Niss is a meditative state. She spends days and hours painting nonstop. Jodie’s work is about the process of how visual language is perceived. Each painting is a moment in-between the beginning of an event and the conclusion. She takes a still from a movie, or an old advertisement, or from a found photo, and she manipulates the image from its original context. The final painting expresses what Jodie is thinking or experiencing at the time of the painting process. The paintings discuss how an image can transform from meaning one thing to meaning something entirely different with a small or large edit.
