Brendan Stephan has been volunteering at MCC as a Mixed Media Studio Volunteer since September. The art school relies on artists who give their time generously to our center to help the studios stay clean and organized, and provide students help or advice. Over the past few months, Brendan has become a valued member of the art school volunteer team, always going above and beyond to support the staff and students
Read about his experience in his own words:
What brought you to volunteering at MCC?
I was looking to get involved in an organization where I could volunteer and work around art. When I found the studio monitor opportunity at MCC it felt like exactly what I was looking for. I also really liked the idea that I would be volunteering for an organization that offers a wide range of services and opportunities to the community.
What has your experience been like?
It’s been great! Everyone has been so nice and appreciative; the staff has really made me feel welcome and like I’m part of the team. There’s always a very positive and creative energy in the studio, everyone is so supportive of one another. I’ve enjoyed being around artists of all skill levels who take pride in what they make and I very much look forward to my time at the MCC each week.
What is your favorite part about volunteering?
My favorite part about volunteering is the opportunity it provides to give back, meet new people and enjoy yourself.
One fun fact about you?
Outside of volunteering I currently work at the art gallery Peter Freeman, Inc. as a registrar.
As a changemaker, volunteers are part of a movement of engaged New Yorkers taking action to strengthen Lower East Side and beyond. Our spotlight series provides an opportunity to share the stories of why community members get involved, what they gain from the experience, and the impact they are able to make at the Manny Cantor Center and in the community. Thank you to all who choose to come through our doors to help build the neighborhood we want to live in.
If you are interested in volunteering or getting involved with us here at Manny Cantor Center, we have opportunities available for a variety of schedules and interests. Learn more about about being a Volunteer Changemaker at MCC.
