AAPI Heritage Month: Things to Do With Kids in NYC

Did you know that NYC is home to the second-highest population of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the United States? Much of the city’s vibrant art, food, and culture can be attributed to the AAPI community, which is why May — AAPI Heritage Month — is a perfect time to celebrate our neighbors that help make NYC such a special and culturally rich city.

What is AAPI Heritage Month?

AAPI Heritage Month celebrates the contributions and achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States.

Asian/Pacific is a rather broad term, so those who aren’t familiar may be wondering exactly who the AAPI community refers to. Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of:

  • Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands)
  • Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, and the Federated States of Micronesia)
  • and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, and Easter Island)

AAPI Heritage Month History

In 1992, the month of May was designated by Congress as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843 — and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, since the majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.
