If you’re still curious about our Early Childhood summer programs, check out this Q&A with Summer Session Co-Director, Leah Mansback, about her love of creativity, community, and Early Childhood Education!
Why did you decide to focus your career in early childhood education?
I have always loved kids, but when I stepped foot inside the classroom, I knew I wanted to work with children for the rest of my life. In addition to working in a classroom, I felt most energized and rewarded when working one-on-one with a child. This led me to pursue a Masters in Social Work with a focus on early childhood trauma, after working in digital media for about five years after college.
What is your favorite part about working with kids?
I enjoy watching children problem solve on their own. It is extremely gratifying to watch children come up with solutions to a problem – big or small – with the help of their peers. Children have the ability to be creative, critical thinkers and often can find multiple solutions to their problems that even a teacher would not have considered. This is just one way I am able to learn from the children on a daily basis.
What are you looking forward to most about summer session?
Summer in New York City – especially on the Lower East Side – is incredible. It is finally a time for the kids to enjoy all that the community has to offer. I most enjoy the field trips and special activities outside. I am a big fan of yoga in the park and neighborhood adventures. The more we can take advantage of our natural surroundings, the better!
What is the best spot on the LES for kids?
You (Leslie) mentioned in your Q & A that Seward Park is the best spot in the LES for kids, and I have to agree. There is just so much to do there! From the playgrounds, to the sprinklers, to the fun and free events (some of which the Manny Cantor Center is organizing!), it’s always a blast.
What do you do in your free time?
When I am not studying, I enjoy biking around Brooklyn (where I live). I also love baking, cooking and trying new restaurants. I think that the kitchen can be an amazing place for a child to learn and grow, and I fully expect to be cooking up delicious treats with the children in the classroom this summer!
