Child Tax Credit Information

Educational Alliance was joined on July 12, 2021 by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Congresswoman Nydia Velasquez, Benjamin Anderson from the Children’s Defense Fund-NY, and members of the Educational Alliance community to voice support for a permanent expansion of the federal Child Tax Credit. The goal of the event was to continue to spread awareness of the benefits available to families across our city, state, and country and to call on Congress to make those benefits permanent. A permanent expansion of the federal Child Tax Credit has the potential to bring much needed relief to working families and to break the cycle of poverty for 50% of children from low-income families. Through our Family Resource Center, Educational Alliance will continue to lead on this issue and advocate on behalf of the families we serve.

MILLIONS OF FAMILIES ARE ELIGIBLE FOR CHILD TAX CREDIT CASH REFUNDS RECENT CHANGES TO THE FEDERAL CHILD TAX CREDIT (CTC) MEAN THAT FAMILIES CAN NOW RECEIVE DIRECT CASH PAYMENTS OF UP TO $3,600 PER CHILD.

WHAT IS THE CHILD TAX CREDIT? The Child Tax Credit (CTC) is a decades-old support for families to help them afford the everyday expenses of raising children.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE? All families in the U.S. and territories qualify for the CTC. Joint filers making up to $150,000, a single head of household making up to $112,500, and other single filers making up to $75,000 qualify for the full advanced periodic payment of the CTC. Even families who have no income at all are eligible. We can help you access the money you are legally owed.

HOW MUCH WILL I RECEIVE? It depends on your income, how many children you have, and their ages. We can help you calculate your exact refund, but the highest amounts are $3,600 per child under six years old and $3,000 per child age six to 17.

HOW DO I ACCESS THE MONEY? The refunds will be distributed by the IRS so you need to file a 2020 tax return. If you didn’t file taxes in 2020, the IRS will use your 2019 tax return. If you haven’t filed recently, you should try and do so before the May 17, 2021, deadline or request an extension. We can help with both!

ARE THERE ANY STRINGS ATTACHED? Each child in your family needs to have a social security number in order to qualify for the refund. However, this money is not considered income. That means it will not be taxed. It also does not affect your eligibility for other benefits and cannot be taken away. We can help address other concerns you have about filing for the refund.

IS THIS THE SAME AS A STIMULUS CHECK? No, this money is in addition to the one-time payments of $1,400 that were recently sent by the federal government.

HOW CAN EDUCATIONAL ALLIANCE HELP? Educational Alliance’s network of community centers in Lower Manhattan includes the Manny Cantor Center (MCC). At MCC, our Family Resource Center is providing free guidance on the details of the new law and free support for families trying to file their 2020 tax returns. * Information about the CTC provided above was adapted from the Children’s Defense Fund (childrensdefense.org)
