Northside Center for Child Development Satellite Clinic @ MCC

Manny Cantor Center and Northside Center for Child Development are pleased to announce the opening of Northside’s Satellite Clinic @ MCC on October 19th, 2021.

Northside clinic will provide individualized treatment and family treatment to children and families at MCC as part of the wraparound services available to our community through the Family Resource Center @ MCC.

Northside Center for Child Development has been a leader in mental/behavioral health and education services since 1946. With a focus on clinical excellence and emphasis on strengthening families and children’s self–esteem, Northside’s innovative programs were the first of their kind in Harlem, and have set a standard of excellence in behavioral health for low-income children and families facing trauma. NCCD empowers families, leading to stronger educational and mental health outcomes for children.

Northside was founded by pioneering psychologists Drs. Kenneth B. and Mamie Clark. Their work—which showed how racial inequality negatively affected the self-esteem of young children—helped change the course of American history.

The Clarks’ groundbreaking research The Black/White Dolls Test, was the first-ever social science research to be submitted as hard evidence in the Supreme Court’s history and was critical to the ruling in the landmark “Brown v. Board of Education” (1954) decision, which legally ended segregation in public schools.

NCCD’s founders believed in tapping into the inherent strengths of children and families to help them overcome obstacles and thrive. This philosophy continues to be the bedrock of our work today. Their goal is to foster and cultivate self-esteem in the children we serve.

Northside’s clinics provide youth and their families with psychiatric, psychopharmacological, and psychotherapy services. Clinical staff is trained in evidence-based treatment models including Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Community or Parent Education (COPE), Knowledge Empowers You (KEY), and Power Source.

This partnership is made possible by the Family Resouce Center @ MCC. The Family Resource Center takes a holistic approach to the wellbeing of the community that we serve, which means that we offer programs that speak to individuals’ physical, financial, spiritual, educational, and basic needs. That said, we know that our work around holistic care would not be complete if we did not also focus on the mental health and wellbeing of our community, which is why we are proud to be in partnership with the Northside Center for Child Development. Through Northside, we will be able to support community members’, particularly young children and families’, emotional needs. The timing for this venture is so important because our community and our world continue to wrestle with the overwhelming emotional effects of the pandemic. This collaboration with Northside is one of the ways that we are offering the community proven supports that will help individuals to manage stress and explore what happiness, fulfillment, peace, and “better” looks and feels like in their lives.

Northside’s hours, which are by appointment only, are Monday – Friday, 8AM – 8PM. Northside’s Early Childhood Clinic is open to the whole Lower East Side community. More specifically, Northside serves children aged 0-5, their caregivers, their siblings; and pregnant women.
